I'm beyond thrilled to share that my debut novel, Bound by Polaris, just received its first official review — and it’s everything I could’ve hoped for and more.
“Bound by Polaris by Julie D. Jones is a gripping and intelligently written addition to the Moorland Forensics series. Set in the rugged landscapes of South Devon, the novel follows the Sinclair siblings—Katie, James, and Fiona—as they investigate the brutal murder of Muriel Jennings, a widow found fatally attacked in her rural home near Ashburton.
While the novel offers the satisfying pace
and suspense of a classic murder mystery, it goes far beyond genre
expectations. Jones blends authentic forensic science with deeply human
storytelling, crafting a layered narrative that explores not only the intricacies
of solving a crime, but also the fragility of memory, the weight of trauma, and
the complex ties that bind families together.
Katie Sinclair, a forensic psychologist,
anchors the emotional and investigative heart of the story. Her interviews with
suspects and witnesses expose more than surface-level facts—she peels back the
emotional fabric behind alibis and motives. Katie’s own past trauma—she is a
survivor of rape—adds emotional weight to her role. Her interactions with the
victim’s son, the cold and calculating Mark Jennings, stir deeply personal
discomfort, and Jones portrays Katie’s internal conflict with subtlety and realism.
In parallel with the Jennings
investigation, Katie begins to follow a trail that leads back to the infamous
Ted Cartwright case—a chilling historical murder involving five women found
buried on Dartmoor. Cartwright’s daughter was present in the house at the time,
and the publication of a controversial novel, The Sinner’s Daughter,
has kept public speculation alive for years. As Katie digs deeper, she begins
to suspect that the past may be casting a long shadow over the present case.
This dual narrative—unfolding in the
current investigation and through Katie’s exploration of Cartwright’s
crimes—adds narrative richness and raises compelling questions about guilt,
truth, and the reliability of perspective. The inclusion of the fictional book
read by Muriel’s local book club becomes more than a background detail; it
connects lives, memories, and perhaps motives in unexpected ways.
Jones handles forensic detail with
precision, from gas chromatography and DNA sampling to postmortem analysis.
These elements lend credibility to the investigation, but are never overly
technical. Instead, they enrich the realism and support the story’s progression.
Beyond the procedural elements, Bound
by Polaris is a study of fractured relationships and long-buried
secrets. From the Jennings family’s carefully managed public image to the
emotional undercurrents within the Sinclair siblings themselves, the novel
explores how people conceal pain, protect reputations, and navigate trust in
the wake of loss and violence.
The evocative Devon setting, complete with
moody Dartmoor landscapes and close-knit village dynamics, enhances the story’s
tension and intimacy. Jones has a gift for capturing both atmosphere and
emotional nuance, drawing the reader into the heart of the mystery.
In sum, Bound by Polaris is more than a forensic thriller—it’s a layered, emotionally resonant novel about truth, trauma, and the unspoken histories we carry.”
If you're into twisty mysteries with heart, trauma recovery, forensic psychology, and a dash of moody Dartmoor drama… this one's for you.
